What is a Root Canal?

Root canal treatment is performed to repair and restore teeth that have become severely damaged, decayed, or infected. The root canal procedure treats infections or inflammations inside the tooth, in a natural chamber in the center of each tooth. Each root canal contains the pulp chamber, which is filled with the blood vessels, nerve endings, and connective tissue of the tooth. This soft material is called dental pulp.

The nerve of your tooth is contained in this sensitive material. A tooth’s nerve allows you to sense heat or cold. If your dental pulp becomes infected or inflamed, it can cause widespread infection in the root canal. This occurs for a variety of reasons, including severe decay, repeated dental procedures performed on the tooth weakening its structure, cracks, chips, or trauma.

When do you need a Root Canal?

Once the pulp and the nerve become infected, it presents as an abscess. An abscess is a pus-filled pocket that develops at the end of your tooth root. Symptoms of infection include:

  • Severe and prolonged toothache
  • Prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold
  • Pain or swelling in the face, jaw, or neck
  • Pain when biting or chewing

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, call our office right away.

What happens during a Root Canal?

In most cases, a root canal requires one to two visits to our Chesterfield office. The first step is to perform an examination and take a digital X-ray to assess the condition of your tooth. Once our dentist determines if there are any signs of infection in the surrounding jawbone tissue, we will begin the procedure.

First, our team will administer a local anesthetic to numb your tooth and make your procedure as comfortable and pain-free as possible. Next, we will remove the infected pulp from the inside of your tooth before thoroughly cleaning the root canal. Then we will seal the root canal to prevent future infection. To complete the restoration, we will cap your tooth with a dental crown. Our practice offers high-quality porcelain crowns to fully restore the natural look, strength, and function of your tooth.

Is a Root Canal painful?

Most patients experience little to no discomfort during their root canal procedure. For your comfort, we offer sedation options, including laughing gas and oral sedation. Be sure to discuss sedation with our team to determine if laughing gas or oral sedation is right for you.
